Egg Powder Review

This next item I would like to review for you is our egg powder. I`m sure your thinking....NASTY!!! Am I right? When I had my 1st party my mom was helping me with the cooking. When I told her I wanted her to make scrambled eggs with our egg powder she thought I was crazy! After she made them she tried them and said these are actually really good. They don`t taste any different than fresh eggs.

Our egg powder come in 2 different sizes, a #10 can (1 gallon) and our pantry size can. The pantry can is about 1/3 - 1/4 the size of the #10 can. The #10 can hold 236 eggs and is $20.99. The pantry can holds 60 eggs and is $9.09 To make an egg you use 1 TBS of egg powder and 2TBS of water.

Our egg powder last 5 years unopened and 6 months opened. If you do a lot of baking or eat a lot of scrambled eggs the #10 is great. Its the best value. If you dont do as much baking or don`t eat as many scrambled eggs than the pantry size can is what you want!

If you are wanting to compare apples to apples. Shelf Reliance eggs are about .09 cents each. Comparing that to my local grocery store that has 1 doz eggs for about $1.89. You will pay about .16 cents each.

When you rehydrate the egg powdered they do look different from a fresh egg. They are not thick like a fresh egg. Once they are cooked they look the same. I have used the powdered eggs for scrambled eggs, french toast, fried rice/wheat and in ALL my baking. I have yet to have anyone notice the difference. When you use powdered eggs in your baking add the powder with your dry ingredients and the water with the wet ingredients. There is no need to rehydrate the eggs 1st. The 1st time I used the powdered eggs in something other than baking I was making breakfast and was running out of eggs. I just added a couple powdered eggs to the eggs I had left and my kids didn`t even notice! I have some VERY picky eaters so that says a lot!

Do you need 1 more reason to try our powdered eggs? Here it is. Are you worried about letting your kids...our yourself...eat cookie dough? Afraid they will get sick. Well when you use our powdered eggs there is no worrying. You can now let your kids....or yourself....eat as much as they want. How sweet is that!

FD pineapple

To help you become more aware of the different products that we carry I decided I would start featuring different products and telling you what my family and I think of them.

I have to start off with my most fave product we carry....Freeze Dried (FD) pineapple. From day one this has been my families fave product! My 13 yr old daughter actually asked for a can for Christmas. :) The FD pineapple is great straight out of the can, its also good on cereal or in baked goods. I havent found a way that we dont like it. Retail price is $37.39, party pricing is $33.69. You can order directly from Shelf Reliance but as you can see you will save $3.70 by ordering through me! Who isnt up for saving some money! The FD pineapple is good for 25 yrs unopened and 1 yr opened.

If you would like to sample or order some let me know!

Freeze dried vs dehydrated

When looking at all the different food we carry you will notice 2 things, dehydrated and freeze dried foods. But what is the difference?

Our food is ALWAYS picked at the peak of ripeness. So the food you are getting is full of flavor and nutrients. Freeze Dried, also labeled with (FD): After, say pineapple, is picked it gets put into a machine that drops the temp down to between -50 & -80 deg so it is flash froze. That locks the flavor, color & nutrients in. Then in a vacuum chamber most of the moisture is removed and wallah you have freeze dried foods.

Most people have heard about dehydrated foods but do you know what the process is? A lot of people, including my self, have dehydrators in their homes. When you put the food on the racks you then use heat to dry the food. In the process the food looses some of its color, flavor and nutrients.

As you can see freeze dried is better for you! So you`ve learned what the difference is between FD and dehydrated. Lets talk about shelf life. Dehydrated typically lasts for 7-10 yrs. FD 20-30 yrs. That is a huge difference. Because FD is a newer process and is more involved it does cost more. Lets take the pineapple for instance. Dehydrated is $16.89 (party price), FD is$33.69 (party price). Those prices are for a #10 can. You might be paying about double for the FD BUT it lasts for twice as long. So looking at it long term it is worth paying more....and I think it is way better.

What will you be doing when a storm is coming?

A few weeks ago it was my turn to take my daughter and niece to preschool. I had finished everything I needed to get done that day and had a little extra time before I had to pick up the girls so I decided to go to Fred Meyers. We were low on milk and I wanted to look at some clothes for my trip to Hawaii. When I got there I thought man this place is packed. I had never been to the store when so many people had been there. Going up and down the food isles i felt like I had to run so I wouldnt get ran over. I got my milk and got out of the food section and went to look at clothes.

When I went to check out I said to the cashier man you are busy today I wonder why. She looked at me weird and said probably because of the storm that is coming tonight. It kind of shocked me for a second. It never once crossed my mind to run to the store to stock up on food. But that is what everyone was doing. Running to the store in case they couldnt get out of their houses.

Thank goodness for my food storage. I didnt even think twice about if we had food or not. I knew my family would be ok! What will you be doing when a storm is on its way?

Where will you be when an emergency strikes?

My husband and I had a very interesting experience while we were in Hawaii. The last night there we went up to our hotel room after having dinner. While my husband was getting us some water from the store in the lobby I started flipping through the channels only to stop on a news channel and see that there was a tsunami watch. After a few minutes they changed it to a warning. My husband finally got up to the room and I said you have to watch the news. We soon learned that we were going to have to be evacuated to the top floor of our hotel. The news then said that the water was going to be shut off on the island and to fill bath tubs, sinks, anything that will hold water. It really started to get scary not knowing what was going to happen or how bad things were going to be. They closed the airport. We didnt know if we were going to be able to fly home the next day.

As all this is going on I was thinking if I was home I wouldn`t have to be running around filling glasses, bowls and sinks just so we would have water. We wouldn't have to run to the store just to get food. I have water and food stored at home.

A lot of people have food/emergency storage at home, in their cars or even at work. That is great! But what do you have when your on vacation? You really cant travel/fly with your food & water storage. But next time I go on vacation i will be bringing at least some food bars with me. They arent big, they dont weigh very much but they will help sustain life! Something is better than nothing.

Here is a pic of a stairway on the beach. The sand was about 2 inches or so below the top of the bottom step. The tsunami waves washed the sand out from around and under the steps.

Thanks goodness there wasnt really any damage and no one was hurt. But it sure made me think about things.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those in Japan!
